Book and Article Credits
Five of Shel Horowitz's seven books cover affordable, effective, and/or ethical marketing. His first major marketing book, Marketing Without Megabucks: How To Sell Anything on a Shoestring, was published by Simon & Schuster's Fireside division. It has been translated into Korean (where it was published by The Economic Daily—Korea's equivalent of the Wall Street Journal—and went into a second printing after six months). Because so much has changed in marketing, this book has been replaced by Foreword magazine Book of the Year Finalist Grassroots Marketing: Getting Noticed in a Noisy World, published in 2000 by Chelsea Green. His self-published sixth book, Principled Profit: Marketing That Puts People First, won an Apex Award, was sold to publishers in India and Mexico, and has been endorsed by over 70 entrepreneurs and marketers including Jack Canfield (Chicken Soup). His latest book, Grassroots Marketing for Authors and Publishers, won Honorable Mention in the Indie Excellence Awards within three months of publication.
Many of his 800+ published and online articles—in such publications as In Business, Beyond Computing, Home Office Computing, ForeWord, Independent Publisher, the Washington Post, The Dollar Stretcher, All About Money, and Macworld—have covered marketing and other business topics. He's covered the UMass Family Business Center's monthly conferences since its founding in 1994; for a year and a half he was the small business advice columnist for the Western Massachusetts Business and Economic Review, and he was also a columnist for Business Ethics Magazine for a year and a half. Shel also writes extensively about travel, arts, technology, frugality/simple living, and many other topics.
Also, Shel was a contributing writer for Knowledge Exchange Business Encyclopedia. He contributed a chapter on Frugal Fun to "The Simple Life," an anthology published by Berkley/Putnam that also includes chapters by such well-known frugality experts as Amy Dacyczyn (Tightwad Gazette) and Vicki Robin (Your Money or Your Life)
Inc Magazine's Step Ahead newsletter featured Shel alongside Jay Levinson (Guerrilla Marketing) as a marketing expert. He's also been interviewed/profiled in such publications as the New York Times, Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, Bottom Line/Business (a three-page story about his favorite low-cost, high-return marketing strategies), Wall Street Journal, Fortune Small Business, Southwest Spirit, Inc, Entrepreneur, and may others—often multiple times.
Speaking, Teaching, and Live Chat
Shel is a popular guest speaker, to groups as varied as the Public Relations Society of America International Conference, Noteworthy USA National Conference (keynote speaker), American Marketing Association/Connecticut Chapter, Publisher's Marketing Association University (several years), associations of independent publishers and/or writers around the country, Smith College, University of Vermont, and many others.
Shel designed and taught classes at UMass on "Starting Your Own Business On Almost No Money" and "Marketing Without Megabucks."
America Online Business Strategies Forum, Inc Magazine Online, Loska.com, and Your Business Lunch have featured Shel as a live online chat or teleclass guest expert. He's also a frequent guest and Advisory Board member for SmallBusinessAdvocate.com, a syndicated business radio program.
Internet
In Cyberspace, Shel publishes Down to Business, Global Arts Review, and Global Travel Review webzines, along with Monthly Frugal Fun Tips and Monthly Frugal Marketing Tips. His original site, http://www.frugalfun.com, was established in 1996 and has won numerous awards; he currently owns and operates nine websites.
He has successfully run his own small business, Accurate Writing & More, since 1981—starting it with $200 of total startup costs, including $12 for marketing! He has used a variety of low-cost marketing methods, including twelve years of online marketing, to attract a global clientele for his marketing consulting and copywriting, publishing consulting, and other services. Shel works with authors, publishers, small businesses, nonprofits, and solopreneurs.
